the only tattoo i've ever liked

On the subject of my obsession with birds/feathers, I thought this tattoo was gorgeous. Obviously I would never get one for myself, but if I was forced to get something, I wouldn't balk at the idea of this one. Called "Birds of a Feather" on many a Google image search, this tattoo by Sheishere on Deviantart has gotten the same-named Phish song stuck in my head.

please please please: nerdy things i need

Bill Nye the Science Guy taught me that inertia is a property of matter, that it is entirely possible to walk on hot coals, and how to do all kinds of fun household experiments. Honestly I wanted a shirt that said... "DID YOU KNOW THAT..." on the front and "NOW YOU KNOW" on the back. This will have to do.

Reboot was one of the best shows on TV at one point. There's no need to argue with that statement, because anyone who thinks otherwise has never seen the show (obviously). So how can I pay homage to it in the greatest possible way (aside from painting myself blue and calling myself Bob)? I can decorate my room with it, of course!

Where I found it (this guy is nuts): Haku's Reboot Museum

My walls at school are bare. I need posters. What better reminder can I put on my wall to be conscious towards the health of the earth at the same time as looking at one sexy mullet than this Captain Planet poster?

restaurants i need to get to this summer...

Whilst searching for a good Thai restaurant to go to tonight (narrowed it down to 3, yes!), I came across some very interesting and obviously delicious unique restaurants in Toronto. This city truly rocks, and any foodie like me could get very fat very easily by living here.

Here are some of the ones I have to try:

Smoke's Poutinerie

So far, the only place that I know of that makes me want to request poutine as my last meal is Chez Claudette in St. Marguerite de lac Masson in Quebec. New york fries just doesn't cut it.

Located at 218 Adelaide St. West, Smoke's Poutinerie offers its customers 15 different types of poutine, including Eggs Benedict Poutine, a Montreal Smoked Meat Poutine complete with a pickle and mustard, and for the kosher folks, Triple Pork Poutine with Pulled Pork, Italian Sausage and Double-Smoked Bacon. According to the owner, real cheese curds straight from Montreal are a must, and I couldn't agree more.

Up next for Smoke's is a giant poutine truck to be hitting the streets, and another location at Queen and Bathurst to be opening up in November.

Sweet Flour Bake Shop

I'm picky with my cookies. I like them soft like Entenmann's, I hate raisins but love oatmeal, and dark chocolate cookies with white chocolate chips make me nauseous. Where will I ever find a place that can make cookies MY way? Why are there always so many limits to the types of fresh bakery cookies?

Sweet Flour Bake Shop is more my style. Choose from a selection of gourmet dough, add a choice of over 20 mix-ins, and watch them bake it for you right before your eyes. Mix-ins like snickers and mini pretzels are making my mouth water at my desk, and I haven't even walked into the place yet!

But they don't stop there. You can also make your own cookie SANDWICH (yes, that's right) with a spread of your choice in the middle. Mmmm peanut butter...

Last but most definitely not least, remember the Seinfeld episode with the muffin tops? Well, that exists. But instead of having to throw out all the bottoms, Sweet Flour makes "Topless Muffins" with either an original or bran base and all your desired mix-ins.

Unfortunately, this is at Bloor and Jane, and I don't think they're moving closer any time soon. Full day excursion anyone?

i want an edge piece!

Ah, the edge of a brownie. So crispy and delicious. Chewier than the inside, the slightly burnt edge piece is the best slice of a brownie. This brownie tin is ALL edges, meaning no one has to get into a fork fight for that coveted corner.

stuck in my head... again

I'm going to share this with the rest of you (or at least those of you who haven't seen it... shame on you). It got randomly stuck in my head again at work one day, and I had to watch it again, obviously. Fabulousity.

tornado in toronto

This tornado was seen in Vaughn yesterday. Wait until the end, you can see blue lightning actually INSIDE the tornado.

Cooooool.

My parents used to say that my room looked like the Degobah system. Now if I ever get a pet frog, it can share my messiness with a replica of the Degobah, complete with Yoda and his hut.

coolest pen ever

This pen is way too cool. It lets you draw with any colour you see! Just point at an object (like the leaf in this picture), and the pen mixes either red, green, or blue ink to make the colour you want. Not really sure why you would need this pen exactly, but its still way too cool not to post.

Now is that a boy or girl in the picture?

wishosaurus rex

For my next birthday, this needs to be on my cake. It holds up to 10 candles though, so this year make sure there are two. They can be friends.

perseid meteor shower

Tonight is the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Its caused by the earth passing through the end of the tail of the comet Swift-Tuttle, a fragment of dust left over from 1862. The shower will appear to be coming from the constellation Perseus (hence "Perseid"), although it can be seen all over the sky.

Click here for a map of the sky tonight

Unfortunately, the moon will be relatively high and near Perseus tonight, so visibility won't be the easiest thing in the world. But you can still see it, so get as excited as I do every summer.

Video of the Perseid shower from 2007

Off topic but whatever... this is an awesome video of the milky way rising in Texas. Yeah, we live in that thing.

update

Tried on over-the-knee boots. Not good.

Ended up buying the brown booties and completely breaking the bank. Oh well, I had no choice.

WHY??

Will someone please explain to my why double denim is back in for the 2009 fall season? It seems like finally my dad is getting his way and his wardrobe is being featured on the runway. The picture above is from D&G's fall 2009 show.

I mean, these guys do make it look so damn good.

BUT STILL! This throwback to the 80's is one that doesn't fly with me, to agree with Daniel P. Dykes from Fashionising.com.

Don't you love how it just washes you out?

Kanye, please stop it.

Were baaaaaack!

kid solving 2 rubiks cubes and playing guitar hero

This is the coolest thing I've ever seen. This kid can play guitar hero on expert AT THE SAME TIME as solving 2 Rubik's cubes. Before I saw this I couldn't even fathom how he was planning on doing it, but now I'm completely awestruck. His hand-elbow-eye coordination is unreal.

Guys, if you can copy this feat, you've officially won my heart. Start practicing.

AMAZING

surprisingly cool

I know I make fun of my friends that wear New Balance shoes like its my job, but they just got a tiny bit cooler. Pairing with the company 686, New Balance is creating snowboard boots coming out this year. And if they're anything like what my friends say to defend themselves ("Jeez I only wear them because they're comfy"), these could be a great buy.

Also, there's a Recco avalanche rescue system built into them, so if you get lost/buried in a mountain its not the end of the world.

knickers

There's a wonderful site called Culture Label with all kinds of British paraphernalia. And if you're a fan of Anne Boleyn or granny panties you'll love this product. Can't produce male heirs? Going to be executed any time soon? Celebrate by paying homage to this ex-queen underneath all your clothes.

To all the gentlemen out there, if your girlfriend wore these, you'd be turned on and you know it. Don't lie.

Buy them online! Historic Royal Places

every party needs these

Next time there's a party, make sure to come prepared.

pamela love jewelry

Pamela Love is an amazing designer who's jewelry is so interesting that I want to buy every piece. Her jewelery features animal skulls, human hearts, and talons which are cast in gold, silver, or bronze. She plays the drums in a band, worked as a painting assistant for Francesco Clemente in New York City, and showcases her unusual but still trendy style through these gorgeous pieces of jewelry. When I can actually afford it, I'll definitely invest in her stuff.

Here are a few that I really love:

Gold-plated talon cuff bracelet

From Left: Gold and silver peacock rings, double snake ring, bear ring, ram ring, and an intertwined snake ring... in love with them all

Fun fact: in the series True Blood one of the vampires wears this talon necklace

Crow skull necklace

Check out the rest of her collection here: Pamela Love Jewelery at The Fashion Spot

i want

I think we all know how laborious it is to cook pancakes. I mean there's the pouring and the flipping and the waiting... Well now that's no longer an issue because for $3,500 you can have 200 pancakes per hour with the ChefStack automatic pancake maker!!! Perfect for pancake keggers, really big sleepovers, and if you're just really really hungry, ChefStack seems like the best way to spend my money.

things i learned on wikipedia today: jellyfish

Jellyfish are pretty cool. Here are some things I had no idea about them that makes them even cooler:

- Box jellyfish have 4 stomachs, 4 brains that compete for dominance, and 4 clusters of 6 eyes

- Irukandji jellyfish are teeny tiny (see picture) but have barbs all around them and are one of the most painful and deadly jellyfish
- The species Turritopsis Nutricula is virtually immortal because it reverts from a Medusa (the age of sexual maturity) to a Polyp whenever it wants to escape predators; its also 4.5 millimeters in diameter

- Jellyfish may be increasing in population due to over fishing in certain areas, where they take over to feed on the prey that the missing fish can no longer feed on

- The only jellyfish that is harvested for food is of the order Rhizostomae, and they have no tentacles

- In captivity, jellyfish need to be moved with an artificial current in the tank otherwise they will get stuck in corners

beetle juice

Alpha Orionis, or Betelgeuse, is one of the brightest and largest stars known (a red supergiant), and for all you astronomy nerds going "Ooh where is it??", its located on the shoulder of the constellation Orion.

Astronomers have noticed that over the past few decades, Betelgeuse is actually evaporating, giving off a plume of gas that extends to six times the diameter of the star. If Betelgeuse replaced our sun, that plume would reach all the way to Neptune. However, the star itself is losing mass, and is therefore shrinking onto itself.

In the next few thousand years, Betelgeuse is going to undergo a supernova explosion. Pretty cool.

stop feeding them corn

This weekend up in Orillia we had a campfire and, obviously, told ghost stories. But the scariest thing we heard that night wasn't about Anson Minor or the girl with the green ribbon... it was about livestock.

Apparently, cows are the leading source of global warming on the planet. They produce methane, nitrous oxide, and ammonia when they do their business. They contribute to 18% of the world's greenhouse gasses, which is more than cars and planes combined.

Beef production also effects coral reefs, where the waste is carried into from the Mississippi, creates barren deserts from mass grazing, and pollutes our water with antibiotics, pesticides, and hormones.

So next time you want to go green, maybe ditch the hamburger first.

fabulous? or a little too pretty woman?

I happen to looove thigh-high boots. The best way to feel sexy is to attempt to squeeze into some leather shoes that are trying to act like pants. But while this trend is all the rage on the runway and with celebrities, is it actually possible to pull this off on campus/the street without looking like a hooker? You decide.

Gorgeous.

Fabulous.

Ah, but stick them on a normal person on the street and they seem to be a little much.

I'm still undecided. Maybe I can find a cute pair of thigh-high flats and be a little less Julia Roberts. Suggestions?

the cudder

Love love love love him. Large crush.

This song is "Embrace the Martian" and is my I-listen-to-this-on-repeat-all-day-because-its-that-awesome song.

i make her say

Awesome song by Kid Cudi, Kanye West, Common, and Lady Gaga... awesome video too.

Seeing as I have an unhealthy obsession with Kid Cudi, expect more posts about him.
