Spotted on Etsy:

Belated birthday present anyone?

geminids

Since the Leonids were such a letdown, lets all take a nice break during exams and watch the Geminids! The earth is passing through the tail of an extinct comet called 3200 Phaethon (that's for sure what I'm going to name my kid). There are supposed to be over 100 meteors per hour on December 13th this year, coming from the constellation Gemini (see star map).

Its supposed to be spectacular this year, folks. The moon will almost be a new moon, meaning barely visible at all for maximum meteor visibility.

"door to hell"

While drilling for gas in Turkmenistan, scientists found a huge hole with poisonous gas spewing out of it. They then lit it on fire to help it burn off in a couple of hours. They did that 35 years ago. Its STILL burning.

I think the nickname Door to Hell is obvious.

teeny tiny mp3 player

Available only from Japan (and the nice people over at Think Geek), this is an mp3 player that is the size of 2 sugar cubes. It includes 4GB of memory, rechargable battery, and an earbud attached directly to the player. For two earbuds, plug another one right into the device.

For something that's super easy to use and super tiny, $80 is a steal.

leonid meteor shower

Today and Tuesday look out for meteors coming from the constellation Leo. This shower is the cause of the earth passing through the tail of the comet Tempel-Tuttle, and there will be 70-90 shooting stars per hour. So get away from the city, bundle up, and enjoy!

Edible shoes. Because foot-in-mouth disease is all the rage now! It really makes perfect sense: soft, squishy soles with a hard protective coating. Hobos, rejoice!

i'm a huge nerd

Today I was sitting in class trying so very hard to pay attention, and minesweeper became too big of a distraction. I play it a lot. And today, I got the best high score I've ever had. 89 seconds on expert. And really, this is the only place I can ever brag about it. So check it out:

I dare you to beat that score.

parahawking

Parahawking is the coolest sport to hit Nepal. Its basically parasailing in tandem with a bird of prey. Apparently, the birds guide them to thermals (columns of air used to life birds into the air) to allow for aerobatic maneuvers. What could be dangerous about that? I can already hear my mother saying "It'll peck your eye out!"

Looks safe to me. Lets hope that bird ate dinner.

instant toboggan

Ever see a big hill and wish you'd brought your sled/cafeteria tray? You never need to worry when you're wearing your pull on snow shorts!

Pull them on over your pants and away you go! Only $35 from Orvis via Kid Crave

why does nobody tell me about these things??

Stumbling around Digg today, I found a website called Google Sky. Basically, its Google Earth but 10000 times better, and it consists of detailed pictures of galaxies, nebulae, and planets. You can check it out in infrared, microwave, or even a historical map of constellations and other spacey things. Type in whatever you want to look for, or click around for a bit... Maybe one day they'll make a street view? Doubtful.

the perfect brownie

Obviously the universe can sense my love for brownies (especially end pieces), and some wonderful people invented the Perfect Brownie, a contraption that not only makes every piece an end piece, but makes it easy to share, eat, and love brownies and other baked goods. I mean, this video clearly shows how difficult it is to cut brownies. The world needs the Perfect Brownie.

neiman marcus cupcake cars

Really, the question is just "why?". Just in time for Halloween, Neiman Marcus has a new product out: a customizable cupcake car. Who needs a Barbie electric Jeep when you can have an electric cupcake to ride around in? This baby goes up to 7 mph and is "tricked out in your favorite topping" according to the website.

I want one! But wait, $25,000? I think I'll get a real car... I can always put sprinkles on top of that, right?

2009 ig nobel prize

Every year, Improbable Research heads up a competition for inventions, books, and ideas that "first make people LAUGH then make them THINK". The winner of this year's Ig Nobel Prize was Dr. Elena Bodnar, who invented a bra that turns into a gas mask. Laugh... now THINK.

Some of the other ideas were:

- For the Veterinary Medicine Prize, a study showing that cows with names produce more milk than those without names

- For the Chemistry Prize, the ability to turn liquids (tequila) into diamonds (click here for the PDF explaining the experiment)

- For the Medicine Prize, a man cracked his left knuckles every day for 60 years, but never his right, to test to see if this causes arthritis

- For the Literature Prize, the police report of a man in Ireland who amassed over 50 traffic tickets, more than anyone in the country - his name? Prawo Jazdy, which in Polish means "Driving License"

For more winners from previous years, check out Improbable Research

harvest moon tonight

Apparently there will be a harvest moon tonight, meaning that the moon is close to the horizon, appearing very large and often with an orange/red tinge. Definitely not hard to miss tonight.

punch

Since the discontinuation of instant Polaroids I've been searching for something to fill the void where instant cameras used to be. Enter the Punch camera, a camera resembling that of a glasses case that takes pictures, and then allows you to punch your picture onto paper. There is also a digital gallery that allows users to connect to other people's pictures.

batmobile replica

This full sized Batmobile replica is now on my birthday list. Can any of you pitch the $1 million it costs and get it for me? Come on, there's no such thing as a recession.

Originally a Lincoln Continental, this car took almost 4 years to build and cost over $1 million. It not only looks cool from the outside, but it has all the gadgets batman would want in the interior. So grab your cape, you can be my Robin.

freebording

Ever wanted to go snowboarding without the snow? Now you can, with a Freebord. These unique skateboards allow the rider to skate with no limitations, twist around, and stop just like you would on a snowboard. The board has a special system of wheels that allow for carving, and the rider is strapped in with bindings for easier speed control and less falling off.

Here's a human tetris themed promotional video for the boards which is actually pretty cool in itself:

colour changing umbrella

This umbrella was developed by a UK company called Squid London, and only a limited amount of them are being sold. Basically when your umbrella gets wet, it changes colours, turning a boring everyday object into a work of art.

These ones go from black and white to a colourful pattern when wet:

The secret is hydrochromatic ink, which was developed at a pen company in Japan, eventually leading to the preschool toy Aquadoodle.

today's APOD

Today's astronomy picture of the day is absolutely gorgeous. Its from the Hubble Space Telescope's newly upgraded wide field camera, and shows the butterfly nebula, a formation of gas from a dying star that is 36,000 degrees Fahrenheit and is traveling outwards at 600,000 miles an hour. If this was the sun, it would hit the earth within 24 minutes. It can be seen in the constellation of Scorpius, and it is one of the hottest known stars in our galaxy.

star wars toast

London is infamous for having tons of guys that like to stick their head out their car windows and yell at girls passing by. Today I was wearing a star wars shirt while biking near my house and I got "Oooh Star Wars... giiiirl I could be your Obi-Wan Kenobi!".

A note to the gentlemen in London: Please stop it.

If you decide to be real men and stop yelling at us, you could get lucky enough to wake up in the morning next to us girls to the smell of toast. Star Wars shaped toast.

I pitched this idea to my Feasibility project last year and was turned down. It burns an image into your toast in the shape of Darth Vader. My house is currently toaster-less so I think I'm going to get this one. My roommates are going to kill me.

the only tattoo i've ever liked

On the subject of my obsession with birds/feathers, I thought this tattoo was gorgeous. Obviously I would never get one for myself, but if I was forced to get something, I wouldn't balk at the idea of this one. Called "Birds of a Feather" on many a Google image search, this tattoo by Sheishere on Deviantart has gotten the same-named Phish song stuck in my head.

please please please: nerdy things i need

Bill Nye the Science Guy taught me that inertia is a property of matter, that it is entirely possible to walk on hot coals, and how to do all kinds of fun household experiments. Honestly I wanted a shirt that said... "DID YOU KNOW THAT..." on the front and "NOW YOU KNOW" on the back. This will have to do.

Reboot was one of the best shows on TV at one point. There's no need to argue with that statement, because anyone who thinks otherwise has never seen the show (obviously). So how can I pay homage to it in the greatest possible way (aside from painting myself blue and calling myself Bob)? I can decorate my room with it, of course!

Where I found it (this guy is nuts): Haku's Reboot Museum

My walls at school are bare. I need posters. What better reminder can I put on my wall to be conscious towards the health of the earth at the same time as looking at one sexy mullet than this Captain Planet poster?

restaurants i need to get to this summer...

Whilst searching for a good Thai restaurant to go to tonight (narrowed it down to 3, yes!), I came across some very interesting and obviously delicious unique restaurants in Toronto. This city truly rocks, and any foodie like me could get very fat very easily by living here.

Here are some of the ones I have to try:

Smoke's Poutinerie

So far, the only place that I know of that makes me want to request poutine as my last meal is Chez Claudette in St. Marguerite de lac Masson in Quebec. New york fries just doesn't cut it.

Located at 218 Adelaide St. West, Smoke's Poutinerie offers its customers 15 different types of poutine, including Eggs Benedict Poutine, a Montreal Smoked Meat Poutine complete with a pickle and mustard, and for the kosher folks, Triple Pork Poutine with Pulled Pork, Italian Sausage and Double-Smoked Bacon. According to the owner, real cheese curds straight from Montreal are a must, and I couldn't agree more.

Up next for Smoke's is a giant poutine truck to be hitting the streets, and another location at Queen and Bathurst to be opening up in November.

Sweet Flour Bake Shop

I'm picky with my cookies. I like them soft like Entenmann's, I hate raisins but love oatmeal, and dark chocolate cookies with white chocolate chips make me nauseous. Where will I ever find a place that can make cookies MY way? Why are there always so many limits to the types of fresh bakery cookies?

Sweet Flour Bake Shop is more my style. Choose from a selection of gourmet dough, add a choice of over 20 mix-ins, and watch them bake it for you right before your eyes. Mix-ins like snickers and mini pretzels are making my mouth water at my desk, and I haven't even walked into the place yet!

But they don't stop there. You can also make your own cookie SANDWICH (yes, that's right) with a spread of your choice in the middle. Mmmm peanut butter...

Last but most definitely not least, remember the Seinfeld episode with the muffin tops? Well, that exists. But instead of having to throw out all the bottoms, Sweet Flour makes "Topless Muffins" with either an original or bran base and all your desired mix-ins.

Unfortunately, this is at Bloor and Jane, and I don't think they're moving closer any time soon. Full day excursion anyone?

i want an edge piece!

Ah, the edge of a brownie. So crispy and delicious. Chewier than the inside, the slightly burnt edge piece is the best slice of a brownie. This brownie tin is ALL edges, meaning no one has to get into a fork fight for that coveted corner.

stuck in my head... again

tornado in toronto

This tornado was seen in Vaughn yesterday. Wait until the end, you can see blue lightning actually INSIDE the tornado.

Cooooool.

My parents used to say that my room looked like the Degobah system. Now if I ever get a pet frog, it can share my messiness with a replica of the Degobah, complete with Yoda and his hut.

coolest pen ever

This pen is way too cool. It lets you draw with any colour you see! Just point at an object (like the leaf in this picture), and the pen mixes either red, green, or blue ink to make the colour you want. Not really sure why you would need this pen exactly, but its still way too cool not to post.

Now is that a boy or girl in the picture?

perseid meteor shower

Tonight is the peak of the Perseid meteor shower. Its caused by the earth passing through the end of the tail of the comet Swift-Tuttle, a fragment of dust left over from 1862. The shower will appear to be coming from the constellation Perseus (hence "Perseid"), although it can be seen all over the sky.

Click here for a map of the sky tonight

Unfortunately, the moon will be relatively high and near Perseus tonight, so visibility won't be the easiest thing in the world. But you can still see it, so get as excited as I do every summer.

Video of the Perseid shower from 2007

Off topic but whatever... this is an awesome video of the milky way rising in Texas. Yeah, we live in that thing.

update

Tried on over-the-knee boots. Not good.

Ended up buying the brown booties and completely breaking the bank. Oh well, I had no choice.

WHY??

Will someone please explain to my why double denim is back in for the 2009 fall season? It seems like finally my dad is getting his way and his wardrobe is being featured on the runway. The picture above is from D&G's fall 2009 show.

I mean, these guys do make it look so damn good.

BUT STILL! This throwback to the 80's is one that doesn't fly with me, to agree with Daniel P. Dykes from Fashionising.com.

Don't you love how it just washes you out?

Kanye, please stop it.

Were baaaaaack!
